Tholos tomb at Kephalovryso

A small Mycenaean tholos tomb of the 15th century BC was investigated in 1998 at the site “Paliomylos” and at a distance of about 2.5 km southwest of the modern village “Kephalovryso” (formerly called Halvatsou). Its maximum height is 2.52 m and the diameter of the burial chamber reaches 3.25 m. Despite its small dimensions, it is one of the best preserved tholos tombs in Messenia. It had been used for the burials of a local family. The few finds that accompanied the dead include handmade and wheel-made vases, beads made of bronze, crystal rock and glass paste, terracotta spindle whorls and a stone tool. Terracotta vases from the late Roman period were also found within the chamber, indicating the later use of the tomb.
