Tholos tombs at Kaplani

The two Mycenaean tholos tombs are located at the top of the hill of Vigla between the villages of Kaplani and Zizani and date back to around 1500 BC. Tholos Tomb 1was attacked by illicit excavators. Only Tholos Tomb 2 has been excavated, which has a diameter of about 5.50 m and is preserved at a maximum height of 2.20 m.
It has a stone built dromos (passageway) 5.70 m long. Within the burial chamber a pit was revealed with two deceased placed so that the head of the one rests on the feet of the other. The finds were poor and fragmentary given that the tomb had been looted in antiquity. A few traces of gold, four 8-shaped gold rosettes and two beads, one of glass and one of faience, were found on the floor of the tomb.
