Archaeological Museum of Chora

The building of the archaeological museum of Chora was designed in 1955 by the architect Patroklos Karantinos and its construction was completed in 1966-1967. It houses the finds of excavations carried out by eminent archaeologists such as Carl Blegen, Spyridon Marinatos, and Georgios Korres. Most of the artifacts date back to the Mycenaean period (17th-11th century BC) and some to historical periods.

They come from the hill of Ano Eglianos with the Palace of Nestor and the burial monuments, the Middle Helladic tumuli, the tholos and chamber tombs of the wider area. Among the most noteworthy are elaborately decorated pots, grave goods made of gold and semi-precious stones, bronze weapons, and everyday use objects. This is one of the most representative exhibitions in Greece for the evolution of the palatial Mycenaean art, the burial practices and the Mycenaean civilization in Messenia.
