Tholos tomb at Platanovrysi

The Mycenaean Tholos Tomb at the location “Genitsari”, 1.5 km southeast of the modern village “Platanovrisi” was excavated in 2002 and was found looted from antiquity. The burial chamber has a diameter of 5.16 m and its dome is up to 2.80 m high. The stomion (entranceway) of the tomb, which is topped with a large monolithic lintel, was closed with dry-stone masonry, while the short dromos (passageway) is paved with stones. During the excavation of the tomb, human and animal bones were unearthed, as well as several grave goods, such as faience and semi-precious stone beads, thin sheets of gold foil, an obsidian arrowhead and decorated pots. West of the tomb and almost in contact with it, another small tholos tomb was excavated in 1968, which did not contain any finds and from its construction technique it dates back probably to the Protogeometric period (10th century BC).
