Tholos Τomb 1 at Chalkias

On the hill of Ailias, at a distance of about 1.2 km northwest of the modern village “Chalkias”, two of the three Mycenaean tholos tombs were discovered, apparently associated with a nearby settlement. The first tholos tomb had been looted since antiquity and its contents were quite scattered. It has a small dromos (passageway) enclosed by a retaining wall and a circular chamber with a diameter of 4,10 m, preserved up to 2,10 m high. The chamber contained many bones and a large number of ceramic vessels of various shapes and with elaborate decoration. Two seal stones, a Phi-type clay figurine and several glass beads were also found. Based on the finds, it dates between the 15th and 13th centuries BC.
