The Archaeological Museum was built between 1968 and 1972. Its first exhibition, which was never opened to the public, was curated by the Professor of the University of Thessaloniki Georgios Despinis in 1977. The current exhibition, inaugurated in 2000, was curated by the excavator of ancient Messene, Professor Petros Themelis.

The exhibition is arranged in three rooms, attempting to offer the visitor an insight into the historical development of the city and its importance in the ancient world. Among its most important exhibits are the statues of Hermes, the Doryphoros (Theseus), Artemis Laphria, Isis Pelagia, and the works of the Messenian sculptor Damophon.
